If You Wrote Your Own Job
Description For This Position, What Would It Say?
Interviewers use this question to gauge how well you understand the position. I suggest
at the beginning of the interview you need to ask certain questions regarding what they
are looking for in the position, what they would like accomplished in this position in
the first 90 days, what their ideal candidate would be for the position, etc. If you do
this it will give you a much better insight into what they are looking for than your
competition is going to have. Understanding what they are looking for in the position
up front is a key to know how to sell YOU as the solution to their problems. If you
don’t know what they are looking for, even a superb interviewer is shooting in the
dark. If you want to hit a target, you first need to know where the target is. If you
are guessing at the target you will be unlikely to hit it.
Once you know what they are looking for, you need to talk about accomplishments that
you have achieved that make you the best candidate for the job. If you tell them that
you filled out paperwork, answered phone calls and filed things, etc. those are not
important and should not be your focus. You need to focus on areas that are important
and allowed you to make a strong positive difference in your previous company. The
skills and results mentioned in your story need to be a direct match for “exactly” what
they told you they were looking for in the ideal candidate for the position.
For example: If you are applying for a Quality Manager position and they are looking
for quality improvement, you could tell them you would be responsible for improving the
Quality Process and make sure that all departments are in compliance with all of the
processes and that they are reviewed at least annually to make sure they are as robust
as possible. You would monitor all of the various metrics in relation to quality,
returns, costs of producing good quality and bad quality, etc. You would identify
problem areas, form teams and create “time-bound” Action Plans to resolve the most
critical issues first using Gaant Charts and Statistical Process Controls, etc. – You
need to explain things that are going to spark the interest of the interviewer. You
want them thinking WOW, he is going to accomplish that, he wants to be responsible for
that; he/she is really going to take control and proactively improve our quality,
etc.
You need to come across in such a way that they know that if they hire YOU, YOU are
going to make a difference in their organization. They need to know that you are not
going to just come in and sit in a chair and take up space. Most good managers want
someone that is going to perform and excel in their job, not just come in and do the
job. You need to demonstrate with your answer that you understand what it takes to be a
top performer in the position that you are trying to fill and that you are excited and
energized about the opportunity to improve their department.
Companies don’t want employees, they want results. If you do not add value to the
organization by putting money on the bottom line, YOU are waste. You need to be the
spark plug they are looking for that will take them to the next level. An interview is
SALES. You must sell yourself as the ONLY solution capable of accomplishing world class
results in the position they are hiring for.

Name One Negative Thing Your
Previous Boss Would Say About You?
This question is asked to make sure you can objectively look at your faults. You need
to choose a negative attribute that can also be looked at as a positive instead of a
negative.
For example: One of my previous bosses would say as a negative that I am not very
emotional. When I am on the job I try to look at everything objectively and not
emotionally. In one case for example when a salesperson was all upset because of
something that happened that had affected one of her customers, my initial reaction was
to immediately investigate the problem and solve it so we couldn’t have a repeat of the
problem. I then communicated to the salesperson what we were going to do to resolve the
problem quickly. It was brought to my attention later by my boss, that because I don’t
get all emotional and all excited about it sometimes the salespeople perceive that I
don’t care as much about their problems as I should, even though I immediately resolved
the problem. Now, when salespeople bring problems to me I try to be a little more
animated, excited and empathetic to their situation in addition to trying to solve
their problem so the needs of the customer and the salesperson can be met at the same
time.
As you can see in this example the fact that I immediately solved the problem which is
the most important thing was explained to the hiring manager. That demonstrates very
positive traits, and then I throw a minor situation that caused my positive traits to
be perceived as a negative. I then tell how I took the negative when it was brought to
my attention and figured out a way to make it into a positive going forward, basically
eliminating the negative trait altogether.
In this example you have mentioned a negative in a manner that they can understand the
negative connotation but you also filled your commentary with positive traits and an
overall solution to your negative trait. You need to dig into your work history and
find a story that accomplishes the same objectives that my story does. Make sure you
format it in the same manner and you will impress your interviewer with your
answer.
Make sure that you don’t say, “She would not say anything negative about me.” If you
ask someone to find a negative trait about someone, they can always find something.
Nobody is perfect. While you want to come across as the best and strongest candidate,
you are not perfect and if you try to present yourself as perfect they will see right
through it. You will come across as a dishonest person which could cost you the job.
When I was interviewing candidates, any candidate that failed an honesty question like
this one or an ethical question, could NOT work for me. Those were the biggest
disqualifying questions for me as an interviewer. I MUST be able to trust my staff to
do the right, moral and ethical thing at all times. Anyone that put getting the job or
money over their morals and ethics is a liability to any company instead of an
asset.
